"Public space" is a product of a specific socio-political,economic and cultural context which spans multiple subject areas. With the development of economy and technology after World War Ⅱ,urban space has undergone rapid reconstruction and unprecedented expansion. Then decentralization has occurred, leading to the concept of urban "public space" which is a complex system. The function division of modernism city concept proposed by the International Congresses of Modern Architecture(CIAM-Congres International d’Architecture Modern)is no longer adapted to the development changes of the above urban society, what’s more, has led to the loss of vitality and triggered a series of problems at the social, economic, human and architectural levels. To this end, many architects, planners, sociologists, artists, etc.have made critical thinking and proposed a humanistic-oriented urban design concept.Among the most influential are scholars such as Jane Jacobs,Kevin Lynch,Jan Gehl.Mapping, which relies on the development of traditional cartography and geography,is an important method of urban space research.Between the 1950s and 1960s,mapping not only gained the technological development, but also expanded perspective of various disciplines. This article will focus on how to use this multi-integrated methodology to study complex urban public spaces.Besides, discuss how to break it away from the general information aggregation and further provide more ideas and possibilities for practice.I hope that I can conduct analysis and research from the perspective of design, combine cases from theoretical research to design practice. And explore specific ways of operation.
