Public buildings in China have undergone a rapid development in the last 60years. However, previous researches lack exploration on the relationship between building patterns and plots, without taking the complex controlling factors of commercial plots into account. Therefore, interdisciplinary approach such as building typology and planar geometry rules as typo-morphological base must be applied to explain the formation rules of building patterns. In China, the urban planning codes and architectural design codes as well as construction volume indicators are mainly related to economic interests-oriented, rather than form-oriented. However, building form patterns to some extent follow the design codes and certain morphological characteristics of the plots.Based on careful study of morphological characteristics of all the 645 commercial plots along the main roads in Nanjing, which are grouped into a hierarchically structured category, this thesis focuses on building patterns of commercial plots, and demonstrates how these correlates to controlling factors. Such knowledge of rules can support subsequent urban analysis, planning, and guide future design of commercial plots. The introduction section first introduces the thesis purpose, main contents and structure. The second chapter introduces the thesis background and literature review. The first part of the second chapter introduces the basics of urban morphology theory and reviews the application of urban morphology in analysis of architecture and urban space. The relative urban design codes and architectural design codes of commercial plots are reviewed in the second part of the second chapter. The third chapter categorizes morphological characteristics of commercial plots and buildings inside, i.e. the sizes and shapes of plots and building plans, the volume types of different commercial buildings, i.e. hotels, office buildings, shopping malls, mixed-use buildings, as well as boundary conditions of commercial plots. The forth chapter is the core of the thesis, first evaluates the morphological relationship between plots and buildings, i.e. the shape relativity between building pattern and plot shape, the building position inside the plots, and the volume compositions of the high-rise buildings inside the commercial plots. Then the building patterns are compared with morphological conditions of the plots and the design indicators of the plots, several causal relationships are discovered. The fifth chapter emphasizes on the boundary conditions of the commercial plots and the building patterns. The concluding section summarizes the thesis and points out the defects. The whole thesis contains about 43444 words,112 pictures and charts.
