Tower crane which is widely used in the engineering construction have become the main component of construction equipments due to its advantages, such as high lifting, large turning radius, wide uses and high efficiency. It belongs to the special equipment which may threat people’s life. Accidents are often caused by improper human operation. Training of qualified tower crane driver becomes an effective way to reduce and prevent accidents. However, there are many problems of the traditional training and examining methods, such as low efficiency, high cost, poor safety and so on. Research and development of an operation training simulation system of high performance and full functions to assist or even replace traditional training is an effective way to solve this problem.From the view of safety supervision department to train and examine tower crane driver, this paper putted forward a simulation system for training and examining based on virtual reality technology. An interactive 3D visual simulation mode was build based on the software-Virtools. The actual cab seats, six degrees of freedom platform and other equipments were combined with the system to simulate the operations and reactions when driver using the real tower crane for training and examining. This paper proposed the needed functions of the system based on the actual requirements, and as a goal to complete the design of overall scheme. Then focus on the flexible modeling method of the hoisting rope. Flexible simulation of the rope was realized combining with the physical mode and Curve function of Virtools, including the catenary expression and swing simulation of the wire rope. The deflection curve equation of twin-lift horizontal boom was build to analyze the boom’s deformation based on the unit force equation. Virtual prototyping technology was used to simulate the position and orientation of the cab. The interactive parameters were obtained that can control the six degrees of freedom platform. Evaluation system was build according to the assessment standards, and collision detection was added to realize the automatic scoring mechanism. Finally, key functions of the system were studied, and the feasibility of the system operation was verified by examples.The tower crane operation training simulation system of this paper has many functions. They includes not only the required functions when operating on a real tower crane, but also the functions which are inconvenience to realization, such as over-torque and overload. The simulation of a serious accident can leave an intuitive impression on students, which can effectively reduce accidents. The system uses little resources and energy, can use for a long period and its system maintenance and expansion is easy. The system sets deduction items strictly according to the national standards, so its automatic scoring is objective and impartial. The efficiency of training and examining is greatly improved because manual operation is significant reduced.
