A Primary Study On Urban Public Space Of Cicheng

Urban public space is the living room of the city,it provide a place for citizens to have public activities and embody the clamor of the city.And it’s the place where people come together to enjoy social exchanges and each other,making high quality life in the city possible.But there is a common phenomenon in many Chinese historical and ancient cities, that is, the public space is in scarcity and is hard to match the demand of people living in urban areas. Therefore, a series of problems about the re-creation of Chinese historical cities’public space need to be solved by the designers urgently:How to inherit the historical culture? How to make public space match urban living? How to design the public space of historical cities under present urban environment condition? Under the design strategy of overall planning and giving the priority to crucial problems,this thesis regards respecting the history and culture of historical cities as the principle, try to explore a reasonable method to design the urban public space of historical cities, which is based on the current situation and respects for the history and culture, satisfying the people’s demands of the urban public life.The main chapters of this thesis are as follows:The first chapter is introduction.The thesis describes the origin, purpose and significance of introduction; the study subject is the public space of the historical city Cicheng;it covers from the time and space dimensions; the framework is set up based on the theory and practice.The second chapter resumes the concepts of the public space and related ones:the urban public space, the urban public space in traditional period, and especially the Chinese urban public space in traditional period. It also overviews the factors that affect the formation of Chinese traditional urban public space in traditional period, and gives the problems faced by Chinese historical cities in the process of protection and update.The third chapter introduces the development of public space in Cicheng,includes the traffic, commercial, religious, education and entertainment especially analyzes the development and evolution of Cicheng public space in traditional period.The fourth chapter expounds the rethink of how to solve the problem of the historical urban public space of Cicheng,which are caused by the development of urban public space since modern times and the re-construction subsequent. It leads to the inadaptability between the sharp of historical space and the requirement of urban life. Refer to basic design method of urban space,under the design strategy of overall planning and giving the priority to crucial problems, this thesis analyses three projects combined.The whole thesis contains about 40 000 words,165 pictures and charts.
