Car styling has developed greatly across the globe since21st century. However,there is a tendency of going through a bottleneck for car styling in recent years.Despite all the innovative concept cars showed by major companies on all the autoshows, there is much essential difference between them and their predecessors. Thedifference is clearly not as much as the difference between an80’s car and acontemporary car. Thus finding the next revolutionary breakthrough in car styling hasbecome the center of competition. The key idea is to free car styling from all kinds oflimitations and find new design language by processing with basic form. Althoughseveral companies have conducted similar design methods, this method hasn’t beenintegrated on the whole. Besides each company has its own design approach in actualprojects. So in order to improve the innovation ability for the whole car industry, weneed to refine and summarize the new abstract form design process to some extent.The main research method is collecting different documents, providing a certaindesign method and then testing it with actual design projects. It begins with analyzingcutting-edge car styling and design trends, as well as summarizing some revolutionarydesign methods carried out by some companies. Then it focuses on the new abstractform design process. By optimizing this process and refining the methods andprinciples for abstract form deduction, this essay aimed at finding the designphilosophy for abstract form used for car styling. And it clarifies the definition of formand abstraction in major research fields. By combining multi-principle theory basisfrom art design, architecture and industrial design, the essay also tries to extract somedesign method and principles specifically aimed for car styling. Besides, it establishesan evaluation system for abstract form, enabling designers to understand abstract formand its relations with car styling more intuitively and deeply. It provides a way toanalyze typical abstract form for car styling, based on virtual and reality parts and thecharacteristics of car styling. Finally the essayevaluates the effect and feasibility of the new method by carrying it out in three design projects. The designing for each project used abstract form deduction method and wentthrough simply evaluation using proposed evaluation system, with its own differentemphasis.
