Chinese and Western tradition garden arts both have a long history, of which theoutstanding parts still have an important guiding significance to modern landscapedesign. In this paper, the author utilizes the study method of parallel comparison, firstanalyzes conception of nature and value difference from the perspective of threeaspects, namely, the origins of Chinese and Western concepts of nature and natures,geographical environment difference and evolutionary processes of traditionalphilosophy, and then explores the reasons why different cultural backgrounds result indistinctive Chinese and Western views of nature.The distinction of Chinese and Western views of traditional culture and natureresults in the difference of understanding and expression of nature of Chinese andWestern cultures. Chinese traditional garden art guides the garden construction withChinese landscape painting theory. Being harmonious with nature and respectingnature, China’s traditional garden is called natural landscape garden; Westerntraditional landscape is constructed in accordance with composition method ofWestern landscape paintings. Conforming to the way of geometric composition anddesigning architecture and sculpture as the focus of the composition of the designsketch, the Western traditional garden is called formal garden. Chinese and Westernpeople’s understandings of nature are different, therefore, they have different attitudesin the understanding and the pursuit of nature, resulting in the different garden stylesand characteristics of Chinese and Western traditional landscape gardens. Based onthe above views, the paper analyzes the characteristics and intrinsic quality of modernlandscape architecture, and proposes that modern landscape architecture designshould inherit and carry forward the tradition of nature-based landscape designphilosophy, meanwhile have dialectical awareness and understanding of Chinesetraditional view of nature. The paper also probes into the characteristics of the timesand development tendency of modern landscape architecture, which take nature as thepurpose, ecology as the subject, human-orientation as the core, and geography as thecharacteristic.Based on the above understanding, the paper makes a comparative research oftraditional Chinese gardens and traditional Western gardens and the traditional landscape garden and the modern landscape architecture on the basis of designprinciple and design methods of modern landscape architecture, namely site analysis,design elements and spatial layout. The author analyzes the gardening experience andtechniques of Chinese and Western traditional landscape garden gets inspired fromtraditional design to instruct modern landscape architecture design, making it achievethe ideal artistic conception of walking, sightseeing, touring and living. Finally, thepaper proposes that modern landscape architecture design should follow the naturaland specific practice method for possibility of ecological theory.Through in-depth study of different styles and characteristics of Chinese andWestern traditional landscape gardens under the guidance of different concepts ofnature, the paper extracts local resource and environmental characteristics from theChinese and Western traditional gardens. The objectives of the paper are to absorbChinese and Western traditional gardening experience, combine the traditionalChinese gardening philosophy, techniques and materials and those elements ofwestern modern landscape architecture design to embark on a new path. It aims at thecombination of modern science and technology with modern landscape architecturedesign theory and the implant of traditional Chinese gardening experience. With theabove element, the author is dedicated in designing space that both meets the demandof social function and ecological principles and possesses Chinese cultural elements,and thus providing reference for exploring the design concept and developmentdirection of modern landscape architecture.
