This thesis aims for the application of the tiling tending to natural form incontemporary architectural design. From the existence of human civilization, thestatic tiling exists with the development of human society. From the ancient masonrytiling to the modern colorful skin of hi-tech, from the Chinese traditionaltimber-framed windows to the medieval Islamic tiles applied to the wall decoration ofBuilding, tiling exists everywhere. The tiling theory is related to mathematics,Crystallography, art and design, especially in2011the Royal Swedish Academy ofSciences announced the winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry is Israeli scientistDaniel Shechtman, he found a non-repeating aperiodic symmetrical ordered crystalselephant in aluminum-manganese alloy, which is known as quasicrystals later. Thismajor discovery broke the classical crystallography theory which ruled thecrystallography hundred years. The promulgation of this award, in turn takes people’svision back to the ancient and modern topic—tiling.Fractal geometry has aroused widespread concern in the scientific communitywhen it came out since1975. It not only shows the beauty of mathematics, but alsoreveals the nature of the world, what’s more, it provides a new concept and methodsfor people to understand the mysteries of nature, so it can be said that fractal geometryis the geometry which really describes the nature. The tiling in traditionalmathematics and crystallography is very structured and mechanized, although thecombination of this mosaic and architecture is easy to calculate, there will be a senseof dull and stereotyped of it. So seeking the tiling which not only meets the aestheticof fractal geometry, but also is easy to calculate becomes the center of this thesis. At the first, this thesis briefly discusses the background of this selected topicsand research status of tiling theory at home and abroad, and it sketches the overallframework and the major research methods of this thesis. The second chapterintroduces the basic concepts of tiling, the law of tiling and the main categories andthe application of tiling, this part mainly introduces the regular tiling which isthoroughly researched in the field of mathematics and Crystallography. The thirdchapter introduces the propounding and development of Zhanghua Tiling which tendsto nature, and how to use the parametric design to make it come true in architecturaldesign. Finally, the fourth chapter discusses this subject by five buildings which havebeen completed, which is an attempt to apply parametric design prototype combinedwith the actual design conditions to building design. The final chapter presents the development prospects of the tiling theory whichtends to nature, as well as the expectations of its wide application.
