As one of the advanced third-generation nuclear power technologies,AP1000has already been constructed in our country. It carries our nationalmission of independent development of equipment and ‘go out exploring’strategy for third-generation nuclear power technology. Huge steelcontainment vessel module is one of the most important structure modulesof AP1000Nuclear Plant. Its characteristics such as large size, heavy weight, and thin wall together with the accuracy requirements of installation resultin the difficulty of lifting. In order to overcome the shortcomings of presentlifting with beam method, lifting without beam method is put forward in thispaper. That is setting a group of lugs on one side of the module at the sameheight, and then connecting the lug with sling to lift the module directly. The large finite-element-analysis software ANSYS was adopted tosimulate lifting without beam for these huge modules and obtain theinfluence regularity of three main factors: the number of slings, the positionof lug and the height of the distributor. The simulation result shows that, lifting without beam method is muchbetter than lifting with beam method, mainly in the following aspects:Firstly, both the maximum deformation at each module’s edge and themaximum equivalent stress on each module will be smaller when liftingwithout beam. The deformation at the adjoining modules’edge is very closeand ‘zero deformation as a whole’ lifting for the huge steel containmentvessel module was realized which makes the installation and connection forthe adjoining modules much easier. Secondly, the cylinder module can becut into three sections to lift by removing the heavy beam away which saves both time and cost for the construction of nuclear plant. Thirdly, it enhancesthe crane’s actual lifting capacity effectively and reduces the overall load onfoundation which also reduces the cost on the huge welded grillage slab.Fourthly, it saves the cost on design and installation for the heavy beam.
