Architectures are liberated by free-form curves in the digital era, and more andmore pioneer architects continues to explore the possibilities of complex architecturalform and space in the information technology wave. The new paradigm and pursuit ofdesign have impact on the traditional design ideas. And these kinds of unique andchallenging space construction challenge the traditional structure design andconstruction methods. In this context, the thoughts and practice of Cecil Balmond changes thearchitectural engineering. He thinks about the architecture in a dynamic geometrymind which is from the view of classical mathematics, integration of the internal orderof nature, and achieve through algorithms. He designs architecture by the internallogic that makes the building vitality. He designs the structure by an approach namedinformal, which includes grid, generative line, and delirium, and make it possible tomake up a non-standardized and complex form. The tessellating, section, folding andforming strategy of digital fabrication was used by Balmond to acid design the actualproject, which provides an important lesson. Balmond provides us a new visual angleto see and think about the architecture with complex form by his theory and practice. This thesis makes the discussion from three parts: concept of thinking, designmode and fabrication strategy, to analysis the ideological sources of Balmond, anddissect the structure of his work, then summarize the fabrication strategy in digital ageand take his project as an example. In order to provide a new method for building’snonlinear morphology and structure design and new possibilities for non-standardizefabrication in digital age.
