| The development of complexity science in the 1970s incorporated novel concepts to thearchitecture discipline and left profound influences on previous architect’s concept anddesign method.At the same time,due to the progress of digital technology,considerablearchitecture constructions in complicated forms have been designed and fabricated.Multi-disciplinary integration becomes one of the development tendencies in architecturescience.Cecil Balmond starts to cooperate with many well-known architects since 1970s.Heparticipates in architecture conceptual design stage as a structural engineer.Through hisdesign philosophy and engineering practice,we can get a clue from the structuralperspective to study contemporary architecture design process.Balmond defines his own consideration of the design as "non-linear" pattern.Balmond’sexpression for the design philosophy is relatively ambiguous.The thesis resortsBalmond’S description about the design process in multiple sample reels and attempts toanalysis the structural design strategy.According to the changes of identity standpoint and cooperative architect,through twokey words of "component" and "digital pattern",the thesis concludes two types of structural strategy,namely "component under local conflicts" and "formal principle undermathematical relations",and proposes two key words of "ambiguity of component" and"attenuation of material" as the characteristic of Balmond structural presentation,theprinciples and methods behind the design practice are systematically summarized. |
