Abstract:As one of the most significant components of original urban civilization, the urban waterfront space has been playing a considerable role in the historical development. With the development process of modern cities, the functions of waterfront space has been transferred from primitive irrigation, transport, defense to a vital space for urban publics which aims at ecological conservation, entertainment, economic acceleration, shaping of the city image, etc. Under the current general circumstance which the urban development is blindly accelerating, the control of planning and strategy of the waterfront landscape in rapidly developing townlets appears to be much more importance. Therefore, a study on the townlets’planning and strategy patterns could be effective for creating an ecotypic, humanistic and vital urban waterfront landscape.This paper firstly makes an analysis of the waterfront landscape in detail, integrates the basic types of urban waterfront landscape and their respective characteristics, as well as summarizes how crucial it is towards small towns via discussing the correlation between them and emphasizes the importance of well-shaped urban waterfront landscape space, which leads to the necessity of researches on the waterfront space planning and strategy patterns of small towns.Next come the key section of the paper.Pass the advanced experiences and existent problems of waterfront space planning both at home and abroad which are summarized according to the case study, a more appropriate pattern of waterfront landscape planning and strategy in small towns are concluded, which refers to establish the landscape ecological security pattern by adjusting the ecological factors and renovating the environment; improve the urban land functional use and reasonably arrange the town’s overall space structure; construct a waterfront economic belt/area which is both coordinated with environment and of sustainable development; build urban healthy public spaces and impact the positive effects on ecology, economy, tourism, culture and other aspects of city by promoting the quality, optimizing the structure, increasing the dynamic with policies such as introducing the traditional culture, creating regional characteristic and promoting the town’s image. Finally, based on the practical research on the waterfront landscape space planning in Yuanjiang City,illuminate the great importance this palnning and strategy pattern play in establishing the nice waterfront landscape.
