Fuzhou as the capital city of Fujian province is an ancient city with ahistory of2200years. Fuzhou not only remains the clear city development history butalso contains the classical landscape pattern called “three hills, two towers and astreet(river)”.In the meantime Fuzhou includes many historic ancient buildings andhistoric and cultural sites such as “Three lanes and seven alleys”,“Shuanghang riverlane”,“Chating Street”,“Zhongting Street”,“West Lake Park”,“Cangshan oldforeign-style houses”,“Mawei Shipyard” and so on. In1986Fuzhou had been listedfirst in the second batch of the national famous historical and cultural city. However, years of blind modernization and excessive pursuit of economic interest deprivedFuzhou of its many traditional features. The whole city suffered from a drab imageand became pale. What’s more, even though Fuzhou has so many historic and culturalsites, they failed to properly integrate. That is why Fuzhou lacks of the overall imageof tourism and can not form a unified attractive tourist brand.First of all, the paper study the layout of Chinese ancient cities, analyzing howritual and adaptive planning measures can influence the city layout. Base on thisanalyze, the paper shows what kind of influence the central ritual and coastaleconomy can bring to this special coastal city called Fuzhou. Then the paper presentsthe process of how the North-South axis developed into the East-West axis under theinfluence of ritual and adaptive planning measures. Secondly, according to Mr. HouRenzhi’s theory of historical profile, the paper selects different representativelandmarks on the central axis for different historical periods. After that by digging outthe spiritual essence and cultural connotation behind these landmarks, the paperreflect how central ritual and coastal economy affect Fuzhou’s two axises. Thirdly, the paper use Kisho Kurokawa’s Symbiotic space theory to achieve symbiosis betweentourism and the landmarks. Fourthly, by applying Kevin Lynch’s theory of city image, the paper divides the landmarks into different elements. Only in this way the cityimage can be characterized. Finally, only when the axis landmarks organically combined with the threetheories mentioned above, the unique tourist brand can be established and the tourismcompetitiveness can be improved.
