Plant Landscaping Applied To Private Courtyard Design In Southern China

Courtyard space is the core and essence of China’s traditional architecture and it isalso an important part of the Garden space. Plants as one of the elements constituting thegarden space are a very important material especially in the layout and design of theoutdoor environment. Designs of private courtyard in southern region of China, act as veryimportant role in Chinese’s courtyard design because of its unique design favorablegeographical conditions and historical culture. Its rich plant landscape and landscapediversity provides generous resources for our courtyard study design.First, through collation and analysis of the literature at home and abroad, I want tofigure out the plant landscaping and private courtyard space design in current developmentat home and abroad. This article focuses on South region of China and combines with fieldresearch on the classical gardens of Suzhou and sum up the characteristics of the southernplants classical private gardens, landscaping techniques and forms.Secondly, from the ancient and modern, this article studied the effects of plantlandscaping and function space based on the analysis of composition and characteristics ofmodern garden. And this article also summarized and proposed methods and principles ofplant landscaping for private courtyard in southern region.Finally, combining with some practical cases, classical and modern Chinese privatecourtyard, in Suzhou, did some researchs that how the plant landscaping are applied to themodern design of southern private courtyard. Through practice and research in specificgarden design case, I got verification of the basic principles and methods in my theory andmodified the conclusion of the study based on that. And also I summed the commonlyplant materials, plant space capabilities and combination of plant community that will beused in the design of modern southern private courtyard.
