With the development of market economy in China, city urbanizationgradually.The appearance of the city is also in constant change.City image isconstructed by many public facilities.For example,public lighting, publictransportation, public information system, public health and public service systemetc.They are also called "city furniture".The street lamp, as one of the public lightingfacilities, not only bear the lighting functionpractical, but also shape the image of thecity inevitably.In China city expansion process,shaping the image of the city becomesmore and more important.The image features of city public facilities has been beyondthe functional characteristics.How to choose the public facilities to undertake imagetask, is also no longer the aesthetic problems about the design, but with specificconditionsassociated with the expression of the will.Derived from the public facilitiesin what circumstances, in what form or style, to express the concept andsignificance.This process constitutes the symbol rhetoric a public goods problem.Toinquiry and reply the problem, is likely to help us to uncover the true dimension ofcontemporary China city culture and public products.Taking the street lamps as the research object, this paper mainly uses the visualrhetoric from the perspective of public lighting “image”, that is the style and thesymbol, to track the process which the culture symbol of the public facility is beingdeveloped. Thus, the laws of produce in publicity of public facilities in contemporaryChina cities are further analyzed. Street lamp is the talking culture symbol which isconveyed by its style and symbol. In order to better discover the symbol and the lawsof produce of the street lamp, the author roughly classified the street lamp intofunctional street lamp and ideographic street lamp in terms of how much the streetlamp is symbolized. And the study focuses on the ideographic street lamp, which the author divides into three types according to the style and the symbol: ideographicstreet lamp conveying the local culture, representing national tradition and based onsignificant events. And the visual rhetoric of different types is to be restored andideographic rules are revealed. As a public facility, how the street lamp is designed,produced and selected. The author went to Zhongshan Guzhen, the production base ofstreet lamp, to conduct an empirical survey. Starting with the produce andconsumption system, the author further investigated how the local street lamp isproduced and consumed. Then the laws of produce and the backward political powercontrolling the street lamp can be revealed.
