Stilt house, one of the earliest primitive living patterns, belongs to the Huaxiacivilization that has a long and ancient architectural culture with the north cave.It was widely popular in the South area of the Yangtze River Basin in ancient China.Until today, this kind of architectural forms are also commonly used in the traditionaldwellings of Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guangxi and Hunanprovince, showing its strong and continuous vitality. Stilt house contains the value of artand technology of architecture. And it is the important embodiment of regionalismand nationalismof the architectural history and culture.Bayu area located in the southwest of China’s inland, is the crucial linkage of theupstream and midstream of the Yangtze River. The Stilt house developing in the Bayuarea, has the general characters of the Stilt house in southwest region, and also forms itsown unique personalities and characteristics. However, with the rapid development oftoday’s society, the world is in the process of the synchronization and integration. Andthe traditional stilt houses in Bayu area are inevitable involved in the wave of culturalassimilation. A large number of stilt houses with regional characteristics have beenremoved, and the identification of building is decreasing and disappearing gradually.In the paper the traditional stilt houses of Bayu area are taken as the researchobject. And it’s trying to discuss the development and construction characteristics of thestilt houses under the background of the unique physical geography and culturaleconomy in Bayu area. Firstly, according to the different locational environments ofBayu area and the obvious differences of the stilt house’s features, the papersummarizes the traditional stilt houses of Bayu area as two types: the densestilt housesin towns and the clustered stilt houses in countries. And the paper focuses on theanalyses and researches of the distributed situations, the settlement patternsplane properties and spatial disposals of the traditional stilt houses of Bayu area. Thenthe paper tries to review and summarize the applications of building technology andlocal material. Finally, the paper sums up the building idea and folk culture, finding thedeep cultural connotation of the architecture. By studying the building characteristics ofthe traditional stilt houses in Bayu area, I want to make a relatively overall and roughinterpretation, making efforts in the protection of the architectural culture and the inheritance of the architectural skill of Bayu area.
