It is superior in geography and longstanding in history of South-Sichuan region. In the process of its development, this area creates a new and independent cultural system, which is different from the cultural system in West-Sichuan region and East-Sichuan region. It would be more comprehensive and accurate in analysis. The author defined the ancient gardens in South-Sichuan region by its administrative area, culture and history. By this research, the ancient gardens in South-Sichuan region could be raised its own position, and also complete the Chinese ancient gardens system. On the other hand, my research plays an important role in starting and promoting the overall research on ancient gardens in South-Sichuan region, and fills in gaps in the systematic research on it while promoting the development of modern gardens in South-Sichuan region and advancing the image of gardens in South-Sichuan region.This paper is based on considerable on-the-spot investigation, research and literature reading, and expounds the regional feature of ancient gardens in South-Sichuan region in all directions through three aspects which are the scoping study, the historical and cultural development, the development, types and characteristic of gardens.This paper mainly includes the following four aspect contents:First, the scoping study of this research is not only defined from the administrative areas which includes Zigong city, Yibin city, Luzhou city, Neijiang city and Leshan city, but also from regional features. In this case, the author takes the historical context as the main clue, while maintaining the unity of culture and gardens in the scope of my research.Second, the paper figures out the historical and cultural development of South-Sichuan region. On the basis of the influence of historical and cultural development on the gardens development, it analyses the ancient gardens in South-Sichuan region by stages. It divided into5major development phase which mainly includes period of rudiment(16th century BC-206BC), formation(206BC-581AD), development(A.D. 581-1368AD), maturity(A.D.1368-1736AD) and mature later((A.D.1736-1949AD). Third, the paper summarizes the types of ancient gardens in South-Sichuan region which includes memorial garden, monastery garden, school garden, Confucius temple garden, dwelling garden and guild hall garden all six types. Others which are smaller are not discussed in this paper, such as lychee park and mausoleum park. The analysis is based on the background, development, case study and the characteristics of gardens. In the end, from the aspects of environment, spatial pattern, techniques of building gardens and factors of gardens, the paper also summarizes the characteristics of ancient gardens in South-Sichuan region in detail.The ancient gardens in South-Sichuan region started late. The development of ancient gardens in South-Sichuan region keeps pace with the ancient gardens in Sichuan region. In addition, it maintains its own unique culture where the aboriginal culture is well-preserved. In the history of the ancient gardens in South-Sichuan region, every leap development comes from the contribution of new immigrants to Sichuan region. In the meantime, the inheritance and development of original culture creates the fusion style of the ancient gardens in South-Sichuan region.
