The 1700 mm strip-steel hot-rolling production line of An Steel Inc. is entirely designed, manufactured and testing at home with the independent intellectual property rights. However, due the most of the equipment of the production line is constructed with the old equipments, especially the electric installations are seriously ageing, the control precision is low, and the efficiency is low and the energy consumption is high. Especially in the heating furnace, the control system is based on the analog instrument. When the fuel calorific value and pressure fluctuate frequently, the system is difficult to achieve control goals. The walking beam, as one of the important equipment, adopted the pump control system, the senseless detection walking beam displacement is carried out by using the manual operation instrument, the speed is not easy to adjust, and the production rhythm is slower. These problems make the production line already cannot satisfy the needs of the modern production.Given the problems of the 1700 mm production line, in this paper, we developed a set of distributed control system based on PLC to realize automation monitoring in the whole field of the heating furnace. In the system, the GE 90-70 PLC is selected as the control corer. Through its high control performance and the communication function, combining with the modern computer technology and communication technology, we constructed the control networks to link the field industrial PC and other devices, and realized the information exchanging and the comprehensive control. The design retained parts of the filed devices and the whole production process,combining the experience of operators and service engineers. By hardware form and software programming, the temperature control of the heating furnace is realized, which significantly reduces the energy consumption. The monitoring pictures are designed, including the heating furnace system, cooling system, and the electric system. By network communication, the field detection data and the equipments running status’ information can be real-time display on the screen, and the real-time automatic control furnace area is realized. The heating-furnace control system passed the rigorous examination, and reached the expected design requirements. The heating furnace running practice shows that the design and realization method is reasonable and feasible.
