The Tajik is one of the minority nationalities in China. It is an ancient nation with long history and splendid culture. The Tajik people mainly live in Tash Kurgan Taj J Autonomous County of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, located in the western border of the motherland, where the "roof of the world", Pamirs Plateau sits. The Pamirs acted as a bridge of Chinese and Western culture in the history with its significant position in the famous "Silk Road". The semi-nomadic Tajik people living on the Pamirs Plateau nowadays are called Mountain Tajik after years’ combination of a variety of ethnic groups.Due to the specific characteristics in natural, geographical environment, historical changes and racial integration, the Tajik have many nomadic worship, including worship of the eagle in totem, ice mountain and animals in nature and the sun and fire in religious relics resulting in a unique sense of worship. These worship are then embodied most incisively in their clothing adornments. As Lee Stowell, American master of aesthetics history pointed out in his book of commentary on modern aesthetics history:"worship is not equal to art, but its effects on the development of art are profound and everywhere."Every single adorned element of national costume has its unique cultural connotations embedded, reflecting the deep historical and cultural heritage of a nation. Patterns, colours and shapes of clothing adornments which emerge various sense of worship are influenced differently by worship interactively. Clothing is an exclusive mark speaking the language of national history and culture. The Tajik clothing appeals at its first sight with riches in styles, colours, and adorned patterns. Simple men hat "to mark", colourful ladies hats "koolatah", bright and brave men haban and exquisite beautiful ladies suit dress, together with unique accessories bring more beauties and attractiveness to the Tajik clothing. The adornment art of Tajik clothing recorded the nation’s history, customs, social status, embodied the people’s emotion, wisdom and cultural pursuit. All primitive worship to the sun, the ice mountain and the sheep were reflected in the adorned patterns of sun, triangle and claw respectively. Preference use of red and white colour in adornments traced back to the primitive religion while the graphic use in "Circle" was a mark to the proven worship to Buddhism and the sun. This paper is about to explore the mysterious and cultural meaning of worship in this nation through the adornments of Tajik clothing. |
