Martin V. Melosi is a very famous Environmental historians of United States. Hehas created the research of urban Environmental History of United States, and formedits own unique academic ideology, which is very unique and impressive in the studyof the Environmental History of United States.The whole paper consists of an introduction, body and conclusion of three parts. The introduction outlines the significance of the topic and describes current researchboth at home and abroad. It also include the main features of the study of Melosi’surban environmental history.Body is divided into four parts. The first part introduced Professor Martin V.Melosi’s life and his academic achievement. The second part describes why Martin V.Melosi embarked on the road of urban environmental history studies and his initialexplorations. He first realized the lack of research in which the U.S. EnvironmentalHistory Environmental History of Urban Studies defects. Combined with his ownlives and academic background, Through Urban waste disposal to explore the historyof American urban environment, which has created a remarkable road of theEnvironmental History of United States. During the course of urban environmentalhistory of the study, He recognized that many social factors can affect the urbanenvironment in many ways. It’s not only the Urban waste disposal, but public works,public policy, energy structure, economic development, urbanization, social class,ethnic differences can affected urban environment, in addition to the city should alsobe considered natural environment. So Martin V. Melosi started with the history of theUnited States to start research on energy, depth American industrial development,urbanization and the urban environment linkages. The third part describes theenvironmental history of the city in a series of groundbreaking research achievementsof Martin V. Melosi. On the basis of extensive research, with eco-populism, Martin V.Melosi corrected previous research on urban environmental history one-sidedunderstanding. The urban environment should be seen as an organism, and attachedinto nature. From this point of view, Urban Environmental History should study thecity interaction with the natural environment, public reaction to these impacts, and theefforts to reduce environmental pollution. It enriched the connotation of urbanenvironmental history research, clarified the distinction between urban environmentalhistory of other branches of history. Martin V. Melosi successfully create an urbanenvironmental history research model which could deeply reveal people, science, technology and the relationship between the urban and environment. He also arguedthat the phenomenon of “Technical path dependence” is very common in city publicworks, and revealed the ultimate reasons of this phenomenon. The fourth sectionsummarizes Martin V. Melosi generate significant for the development of China’senvironmental history. On interdisciplinary research approach reflects the orientationof urban ecology and ecological philosophy, on research methods, He advocated thecombination between study of the history of the urban environment and publichistorians. This combination is not only improved the information construction of thediscipline, but also achieve the social value of urban environmental history.In the conclusion, It mainly told that Martin V. Melosi has made outstandingcontributions in theory, in the content and methods of environmental history ofAmerican urban research. His experience has many inspiration and referencefor the development of the urban environment and environmental history of China.
