The wide use of information technology and globalization today have brought unprecedented competition and challenge to companies. Chinese group companies must adapt to such trend through adopting advanced management ideas and information system, so as to build their core strength for competition. However, obviously the currently used financial management information system (“FMIS”) of many group companies is not able to meet the needs. The out-of-date FMIS has become the key“bottle-neck”for companies’growth; building an up-to-date FMIS for Chinese group companies is becoming very significant and necessary.Employing a systematic research approach, this thesis focuses on structuring and building an advanced FMIS for CS Group Company (“CSGC”) --a large state-owned group of shipping companies. First, this thesis analyzes the theoretical base for the construction of FMIS. Secondly, it reviews the FMIS currently adopted by CSGC, and points out the problems in connection with the FMIS. The thesis goes further to recommend that CSGC adopt FMIS based on SAP financial module, and to lay out a framework for the scope, progress and implementation blueprint for the SAP FMIS for CSGC. Last but not the least, the thesis analyzes the problems in adopting and implementing the SAP FMIS and points out the strategies to take accordingly. In short, by building a well-structured SAP FMIS, CSGC can better improve its financial management level and consolidate its internal resource, and further build its core strength so as to achieve its goal of building a world-class shipping group. In sum, this thesis is designated to solve the difficulty CSGC has in implementing FMIS, and to explore a way to the modernization of group company management by means of adoption of FMIS.
