With the advent of the knowledge economy ages, the paces of social reform and restructuring have been accelerated. And enterprises started to enter the era of competition management. As parts of the social economy, enterprises have to make some changes to cope with unprecedented problems. When enterprises encounter problems which are beyond their abilities to solve, the management consulting companies are powerful assistants. They help the enterprises to solve the problems and seek better development. From this, it can be seen that, to some degree, the management consulting companies are related to the survival of the enterprise.Nowadays, more and more business of. some emerging industries, like management consulting, is project-based. The project manager and the team he leads are the core competence of the management consulting company. Therefore, the capacity building of the project manager is not only important to the management consulting company he belongs, but also important to the development of the industry.This paper uses the theory of competency to analyze the competency of project manager of management in our country. In this process, O*net-job analysis, expert group discussion were used to identified that the competency model of project manager of management consulting industry includes three first-grade indexes:knowledge, skills and abilities. The three first-grade indexes contain ten secondary factors. Through the SPSS analyzes the data obtained from the questionnaire, to confirm the relationship between the competency model and the performance of the project manager, which is the ten secondary factors of the competency model have correlation with the nine performance factors in different degrees. Thus, it illustrates the effectiveness of the model. Finally, based on the conclusions, there are some prospects about the future research on the competency model of project manager of management consulting industry.
