With the rapidly development of market economy, the hazard of the negativeexternal effect on society is more and more serious, while enterprises are in chasingprofit maximization. The contradiction between company profit and other socialinterests intensified, make the requirement of social public to the corporate socialresponsibility also become more and more intense. Many business leaders realizedthat social responsibility has become an important means to obtain competitiveadvantage. Therefore, exploring the driving mechanism of corporate socialresponsibility and its effects, and finding the way to promote corporate socialresponsibility, are very important and urgent. It is also the original writing intention ofthis paper.This paper divided the driving mechanism of enterprise society responsibilityinto three categories: moral driving mechanism, interests driving mechanism, andexternal pressure drive mechanism, theoretically expounds how do these three kindsof driving mechanism to work. Based on the survey data of1268Chinese firms fromworld bank, we construct some indexes respectively, such as corporate societyresponsibility, the social responsibility consciousness of corporate executives,enterprise interests, external pressure, and use OLS model and Ordered-Probit modelrespectively, try to explore the effects and features of these three kinds of drivingmechanism through empirical analysis. Then we find that:(1) Executives’ social responsibility consciousness play an important role in theresponsibilities which can bring direct interests, such as economic responsibility,charities, customer service, and have little effect on the responsibilities with high cost,such as environment protect and employee benefit. In our country, the level ofenterprise executives’ social responsibility consciousness is still in the stage thattaking social responsibility passively and selectively. The effect of moral drivingmechanism has limitations, and will be affected by education level, degree of politicalcorrelation and other personal factors influence of entrepreneurs;(2) Interest driving mechanism only has a positive effect on the sales and theformal financing, the effect on other enterprises interests index is not obvious. In theshort term, the benefits from enterprise bearing social responsibility may not make upthe cost, the enterprises which take short-term interest seriously will choose to escape the social responsibility, the effect of interests driving mechanism is not obvious, inthe short term;(3) The external pressure will impel enterprise to take on more responsibilities.Due to the different stakeholders have different resources and powers, and havedifferent degree of concern in different dimensions of corporate social responsibility,so the effect of external pressure driving mechanism on the different dimensions ofcorporate social responsibility is also obviously different.Over all, these three kinds of driving mechanism of corporate socialresponsibility have their own advantage and shortage. Promoting corporate socialresponsibility is a systems engineering, need unite three driving mechanismsorganically. Based on the results of theoretical and empirical analysis, this paper putforward policy proposals to promote corporate social responsibility, from enterprise,government and society these three aspects.
