Research Of Libraries Playing The Function Of Social Memory

Social memory was able to made human being as a continuous and integrated one, the library acts as the practice place for memory of human society’s conservation and heritage. In the process of modernization and globalization and driven by the information technology, more social memory is going to decline and demise due to lack of protection, thus social memory protection becomes an issue, which urgently need to be addressed and bear worldwide significance, and need public departments and agencies in the cultural system to participate and show positive responses. As the extension mechanism of human public culture space and memory function of the human’s brain, the library itself has the function of conservation on human culture heritage. Social memory function is the expansion and extension of the library’s basic function and it’s the inevitable trend for the library to act at a dominant position on social memory conservation for its existence and development. Through in-depth analysis on the research findings, development status and research content, find out the transmission and evolution of the library’s dominant position playing the conserving function in the point of social memory. Based on Marxist philosophy as a guide, Karl Popper’s "Three World Theory" as a philosophical basis, to elaborate the classification of social memory, the library takes corresponding protecting measures against different types of social memories. Starting from the perspective of social memory, do progressive research on the relationship of memory, social memory and the library, then do analysis and elaborate the definition, characteristic and classification of social memory, meanwhile, to state the responsibility and significance on the library’s function of social memory from a deeper level and finally, anatomize the specific measures the library needs to take according to different types of social memories. Taking four links of library’s social memory function as the breakthrough point, do deep analysis at a micro level on operating methods for the library to realize the social memory function in the four steps, which are content affirmation, resources collection, database creation and broadcast, meanwhile, to explore the safeguards on the realization of the library’s social memory function. Taking social memory program in China as an example, do analysis on the current status of library playing social memory function in China, propose optimization ideas at a higher level on library using modern information technology to realize corresponding functions. Explore specific safeguard measures for library working on social memory according to the issues in the current stage.
