This paper introduced a way to design and implement a video imagepreprocessing system based on FPGA. The system combined digital image processingand widespread hardware design technology. The target of the system is building areal-time image processing system in hardware.The system is organized and controlled by FPGA of Altera. This system isdesigned to achieve real-time video image acquisition, storage and processing. Thesystem has one special input which is DFLIR-A01double field medium wave infraredimager. The paper describes the preprocessing system design and implement methodsin detail. At the end,some image processing algorithms are introduced,includingmedian filtering, histogram equalization and edge detection. The hardware circuitdesign of the whole system is in Altium Design, FPGA logic circuit is designed inQuartus II of Altera Corp. Debugging and simulation results show that the FPGAprocessing platform can not only meet the needs of real-time image processing, butalso give a better performance compared with PC software.
