In recent years, widely used in game, medical treatment, education, media, and other fields, virtual reality technology is developing very quickly which is profoundly changing the people’s life. As an important research topic in virtual reality,3D virtual scene can provide users with a visual3D environment with voice, video, force feedback and other multimedia channels to bring fully immersive interactive experience.3D virtual scene is widely used in the field of cultural relics exhibition, virtual industrial simulation, virtual education, virtual interior design et al. As a typical application for the3D virtual scene in the field of traditional culture protection,3D virtual museum becomes an important trend in the development of museum. According to some statistics, China has about350000cultural heritage sites with12million pieces of cultural relics collected in many kinds of museums. Beyond that, there are a lot of cultural relics unearthed every year. However, only few of them can be displayed to the public, due to many restrictions, such as the preservation and exhibition conditions, In view of the fact that3D virtual museum can break the space-time restriction of the real museum,3D virtual museum will expand the museum functions, such as cultural transmission and heritage protection. So how to quickly build3D virtual museum become an important research topic. This paper presents a multi-touch technology supported3D virtual museum design and roaming system, and study some of the key technologies. The novel system uses a tangible surface with multi-touch technology for input and renders3D design in real time on vertical screen. A Voronoi diagram-based algorithm for computing the visibility polygon of any point in the polygon is presented to accelerate rendering. Moreover, Variational Circular Treemaps with a novel circle layout algorithm is presented to visualize cultural relics of this system.
