Scientific visualization focuses on the understanding of different scientific data sets.Effectively exploring and interacting with various data helps scientists understand these data sets and gain inspiration.The manipulation of 3D objects is the foundation of many 3D applications and is the core of the scientific visualization interaction.With the rapid development of interactive technologies and virtual reality technologies,new interactive devices have emerged in people's daily life.Different input devices require different interaction design.This paper mainly explores the merits and demerits of different virtual reality devices in the process of scientific visualization interaction when manipulating structured 3D models in order to figure out what kind of interaction is more conducive to the observation of scientific data research.First,this paper proposes a multi-touch approach to place and orient structured 3D objects in 3D visualization space.The method consists of a set of multi-touch gestures and an additional axis tool which supports interaction of seven degree of freedom including a novel interaction enables users to define a rotation center and view point control enables users to observe and manipulate objects from different angles.Comparing this method with the traditional 2D input device mouse and keyboard through user study,the results show that when dealing with complex tasks the multi-touch input device is more efficient than the traditional mouse input device if the interaction is designed appropriately.Then,this paper implements two interaction techniques in immersive virtual reality environment including the direct manipulation of the structured 3D object by a joystick controller and the use of a tangible tracker to control the interaction of 3D objects.A UI selection mechanism based on gaze input is designed for the interaction of tangible tracker.The result of user study shows that the controller-based interaction method is more suitable for accurate 3D object interaction,while the tangible tracker input device provides a faster and more natural interactive mode.
