Simulating various forms of artistic styles by computers is important in the field of non-photorealistic rendering (NPR). The simulation of Chinese painting relates to a lot of theories and technologies, and it is a research field of multi-discipline integration. Chinese ink painting is profound and variable. Since the artistic characteristics and performance techniques of Chinese ink painting are unique and special, computer simulation of Chinese painting is extremely difficult. After analyzing the characteristics of Chinese ink painting style, this thesis focuses on the two-dimensional and three-dimensional rendering technology of Chinese ink painting.Firstly, this thesis introduced the background and the importance of non-photorealistic rendering. Also, the motive, significance, main contents and innovations of our study are given out. Then, it listed the basic concepts and principles about NPR. Next, this thesis introduced Perlin noise with a brief presentation of its principle, construction method and classification. After several image processing, it achieves rice papers with folds and the results of ink stroke simulating. The results show the importance of Perlin noise in ink style simulation.In order to get ink images quickly, this thesis presents a real-time method which can convert real images into Chinese ink paintings. Firstly, this method utilizes an improved flow-based difference of Gaussian filter to generate edge contours. Then the anisotropic Kuwahara filter is utilized to gather the ink and realize natural transition. Finally, this thesis focuses on pixel-level image fusion technology to find the appropriate fusion method using in the ink style images.In addition, this thesis described the common techniques of3D non-photorealistic rendering model. They are methods of3D building, contour detection, light and texture model building. These technologies are important in NPR field. Finally, it pre sents a contour optimization method with multi-pass rendering to achieve three-dimensional Chinese-painting style. First, illumination model with improved alpha pass is used to complete inner coloring of multi-color ink. Then this method uses mesh expanding and texture mapping to achieve contour stylization. Finally, listed priority three-dimensional depth sorting method is used to hide the excess contours, and the images are achieved by multi-pass.
