As a counterpart of Realistic Rendering,NPR(Non-Photorealistic Rendering)is more focused on the simulation and reproduction of artistic effect of the objective world. NPR has undergone a great development as an independent branch of computer graphics since 1990s, and the scope of design is no longer a simple computer-aided art of drawing, but also cover film, education, games, entertainment, animation and other industries.Like the realistic rendering, NPR has also realized the great leap from the simple dependence of CPU to the GPU computing. The research area of NPR also includes detection and drawing of contour , art style of lighting and coloring technology. In this paper, we propose an integrative algorithm of contour detecting and drawing that mixes the image space and geometry space. The algorithm works well on rendering the internal characteristic contour line of the object and suggestive outline. Meantime, we design and implement a cartoon rendering system combined with the ameliorative Phong shading model. This article is divided into four parts: the first part introduces the research status of NPR; part two presents an improved contour line drawing algorithm; the third part discusses the lighting and coloring algorithm that suits NPR; the fourth part is the cartoon rendering system design and implementation as well as a summary of this paper and future research prospects.
