Since the1990s, with the continuous development and popularization of electronic technology, computer technology, power electronics technology and detection technology, metallurgy process and automation has been integrated closely. Metallurgical automation equipment and technology has been developed and improved rapidly. Although various types of metallurgical equipment in China has introduced a lot of advanced automation systems, but the overall level of automation is still relatively backward compared with foreign countries. It is needed to improve in the digestion and absorption of foreign advanced technology and self-development, thereby reducing the dependence on foreign technology, and realizing localization for most of the metallurgical automation engineering.This paper takes the automation transformation for a metallurgical enterprises steel pipe production line as examples. A systematic study on automation technology application in the metallurgical industry is launched. Firstly, analyze the current situation of the domestic and international metallurgical automation technology and their gaps, and summarize the development of automation technology. Then introducing the metallurgical industry automatic control system architecture, as well as the content of metallurgical industrial automation which including basic automation, process automation, management automation and the globalization of information networks, and summarize the characteristics of metallurgical industry automation. On this basis, the analysis of the typical automatic control system in metallurgical industrial process, such as intelligent decoupling control system in ball mill grinding process, computer distributed control system of blast furnace, billet quality control expert system and so on. Summarize their composition, the adopted method and the function of them. Finally, take electrical automation control technology and automated network control technology for a metallurgical enterprises steel pipe production line as an example. Introduing the optimization of electric drive control system and PQF unit automatic control system, and proposing the solutions of the two problems which are laid the foundation for the integrated automation of metallurgical industry; In automation network control technology, sum up the broader application of typical fieldbus, and the application of Profibus-DP field bus technology in the finishing line proves the stability and reliability of the technology.
