Study On The Pictures In North China Sunday News From1929to1933

North China Herald was founded in British concession by Henry Shearman who was a British businessman on August3rd in1850in Shanghai. It was the first English language newspaper in modern Shanghai. North China Sunday News was the supplement of North China Herald and the content was rich and colorful with beautiful pictures. Studying on the pictures in newspapers at the end of the19th century and the early20th century will help us understanding of the history from the angle of vision and it is also a graphic design to China with a history of exploration.The thesis did some research on North China Herald, North China Daily News and all North China Sunday News within the range of1929to1940, and emphasized on the pictures from1929to1933. Through the study of the main images, the thesis analyzed the content, design elements, the change of the images, images style, as well as the impact on China’s modern design. As a case study to the history of Chinese modem design, the research methods of this article used the literature analysis method, data statistics and investigation. So paid attention to analyze the original data from bottom to top and summarized the research.This article studied on the first English newspaper in modem Shanghai. It summarized the foundation, development and influence of these images and it was the study of the history of graphic design in modern China. To explore the effects of western modem design to the Chinese and using the classic design elements combined with today’s new media trends the thesis tried to create new values of the design of newspapers and magazines. The research from the angle of the graphic design not only enjoys the newspaper which was founded by foreigners in China but more important is a supplementary research of the newspapers and magazines in the design of image.
