To cope with high-speed development of manufacturing engineering, high-qualitycutting tools are imperative. In the process of their design, trial-produce, and manufacturing;precise and efficient measurement apparatuses are indispensable. The Advanced ManufactureTechnology Center of Dalian Polytechnic University has developed an image processingbased cutting tool geometry measurement apparatus. Engineering practices verified that it isparticularly suitable in machine shop applications with favorable performance/price ratio.But currently it is only capable of image focusing automatically along the Z-slide, i.e. thecutting tool axial direction. In the x and y direction, the image capturing and focusing remainto be manually. Personal errors are inevitable and harmful to system precision.The objective of the thesis work is to develop a control system to perform automaticimage capturing and focusing, connecting it with the image processing software to fulfill therequirement of automatic recognizing and measurement. This thesis details the process ofsystem design,assembly, adjustment, and test-run.Test-run of the system verifies that the software and hardware system developed fulfilsthe required indices. The image capturing period of time is no more than28s by usingbackground-difference method; and26s by using frame–difference method. This article usesthe Deutsch law to carry on image refinement processing, the refinement is completelythorough, after the refinement, maintained grain line original topology and the refinementcharacteristic, moreover smooth burr-free. It is effective in improving the operationalperformance of the apparatus and advantageous in eliminating personal errors and elevatingsystem precision.
