Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) is an access network technology based onthe structure of point to multipoint connections, and transmitted by passive optical fiber.Due to the physical layer and link layer, the EPON technology can have the advantages ofboth passive optical network and Ethernet such as low cost, stable bandwidth and goodextension. The upstream rate and downstream rate of a typical EPON system can be ashigh as1.25Gb/s, and with the advancement of Ethernet technology and the developmentof EPON technology research, the upstream an downstream rate of10G-EPON system canreach10Gb/s.In10G EPON systems, network management can be divided into three general parts:operations, administration and maintenance, commonly referred to as OAM (OperationAdministration Maintenance). Its main role is to carry out an effective network and serviceconfiguration, planning and management of the fault-repairing and service testing and soon.Standard functions of OAM include remote OAM loopback link, link monitoring, fault indication and configuration, security, performance for ONU and OLT,security. Inaddition, OAM can also be extended by Organization Specific Extension mechanism. ASOAM extension strategies of different organizations are not the same, in order to ensure theOLT and ONU between different vendors to work properly, OAM interoperability isessential. In this paper, by studying and researching at the10G EPON OAM related agreements,we describe the working principle and related processes of OAM. And learninginteroperability by comparing the extension strategies of China Telecom, China Unicom,Fiber Home. And then realize the OAM by software.
