In the Iraq War, US military's news policy of "embedded" report successfully enforced its gentle control of the media through administration of guidance. Meanwhile, US media's performance in the military actions against terrorism was quite self-disciplined. The administrative censorship and self-discipline would both influence the freedom and independence of press, which is in fact not absolutely free. The research in this field may help us to understand the reality and truth of the freedom of press in the United States more clearly and profoundly. The first part of this thesis makes a research in the conception and source of the freedom of press in the United States and reviews the development and present situation of the U.S. media. Then follow the elaboration of the conception of national security and the development of U.S. national security policies. The end of this part is the analysis of the contradictory and coordinative relationship between the national security and freedom of press in the United States.Since the contradiction and coordination of the national security and freedom of press were concentrated in the U.S. history of war correspondence, the second part of this thesis makes a comparative research in the government's news policy and media's reaction in the wars that United States involved since the 20th century and gives an analysis on the transformation of the government's news policy—form censorship to guidance. The third part of this thesis brings forward four factors that limit the freedom of press in the United States under the precondition of national security—administrative censorship, government's guidance, public opinion and media's inclination. In a word, the news policy and media's performance in the wartimes reflect the two levels of the limit of the freedom of press in the United States when confronting the national security—no "clear and present danger" to the national security and no violation to the mainstream value of U.S. people and society.
