Optical Cross-connect (OXC) is one of most important equipments in All Optical Network (AON). It is a promising technology for AON to design and implement OXC with good performance, simple structure and inexpensive, etc. This thesis presents a comprehensive and in-depth research on Waksman based optical switching technologies with theoretical analysis and numerical calculations. A re-configurated OXC module based on2x2optical switch is designed and implemented.The Background of the paper is based on the needs of the electric power system, the port numbers are did not asked while the costs and controllability is mainly considered.Firstly, this thesis gives a brief introduction of OXC principles and key techniques. Followed is the performance analysis of OXC. The Waksman based OXC are studied in detail including scalability, no-blocking characters, multiple stages switching matrix, cost analysis, etc. This thesis proposed a routing algorithm for Waksman based with theoretical analysis and numerical calculations. Finally, a low cost4x4optical switching module experiment-ary system is presented including software and hardware designing. Some important performance parameters such as insert loss and return loss are tested which well meet the initial design specification.
