With the development of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology, the next generation all optical networks have a promising future. At the access net level the Ethernet passive optical network will be a dominant, and the ability to provide optical link is required.On the base of low crosstalk optical cross connect (OXC) unit, an automatic circuit switching system is introduced. Major subjects in this thesis are discussed as follows:(1)According to massive learning of relative references, a review has been made about the structure and function of OXC in and abroad and the way to realize optical link switch is studied. A review is made about the types and features of different optical switches, which are the key components of OXC.(2)A detailed analyzing of the data format in TCP/IP network is given; generating a method to derive link information from Ethernet datagram. Based on the low cross talk OXC, a new Ethernet interface I/O port is added. Details are given on the design of switch control unit according to the optical link switch requirement. The experimental network is setup, and the automatic setup of a pear-to-pear optical link is successfully realized. The OXC is upgraded from manual optical link setup to automatic optical link switching.(3)The crosstalk performance in communication system is experimentally investigated. A method of indicating the crosstalk performance using the UDP package loss rate is introduced. Results show that the low crosstalk OXC can remove most of the influence of crosstalk and has excellent performance. These results show a potential usage of OXC constructed by higher crosstalk coefficient optical switches (>-10dB), which means a much lower cost in providing optical switching to the access networks.(4)The work done on control unit is summarized. The success experience and lessons gained are discussed. Several improvement ideas are provided.
