Purpose: With the information collected by four diagnostic methods and theretrospective analysis of samples of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)syndromes of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) based on data mining technology, the present thesis aims to discover the TCM syndromes of MDS, the principle ofsyndrome differentiation and the application of traditional Chinese herbalmedicine. It is hoped that the study would provide support for the TCM diagnosisand syndrome differentiation treatment for MDS.Method: the study utilizes data mining software to make a cluster analysisand statistical treatment to the syndromes and the application of traditionalChinese herbal medicine in398MDS cases. Together with original data in otherstudies, the author summarizes the data and information needed in the experiment.Result: the398MDS patients are mainly above50years old; and their clinicalsamples were grouped into two on the basis of risk stratification in the lightof IPSS score standard. The two groups are as follows: low risk group, containing291patients mainly with RCMD; high risk group, including107patients mainlywith RAEB-I, RAEB-II. In terms of the occurring frequency of syndromes, fatigueranks the first, followed by pale complexion, and palpitation and cheststuffiness comes the last. Based on cluster analysis, the syndromes of MDSpatients can be concluded as the following six types: deficiency of qi and blood>deficiency of both qi and yin> deficiency of yin and yang> liver-kidney yindeficiency> weakened body resistance and toxic heat flourishing>spleen qideficiency. In low risk group, there are three syndromes, i.e. deficiency ofqi and blood> spleen yang deficiency>deficiency of qi and yin. While, in highrisk group, there are five syndromes, that is, weakened body resistance and toxicheat flourishing> deficiency of qi and blood> deficiency of yang> deficiencyof qi and yin> liver-kidney yin deficiency. As for the application of traditionalChinese herbal medicine, totally384types of them are applied, with281forlow risk group, and103for high risk group. In low risk group, deficiency-nourishing drugs play the major role; whereas, in high risk group,deficiency-nourishing drugs are supplemented by antipyretic and antidotemedicines, such as Hedyotis diffusa Willd, solanum nigrum and so on.Conclusion: based on the study of398MDS clinical cases, the present thesisholds that the general syndrome differentiation of MDS patients is mainlydeficiency of qi and blood, deficiency of qi and yin and deficiency of yin andyang. The major syndrome for low risk group is deficiency of qi and blood; while,in the high risk group, they are weakened body resistance and toxic heatflourishing, deficiency of qi and blood, etc.. Therefore, it can be safelyconcluded that deficiency of qi and blood is the common syndrome. Pathogenicfactors are the important factor for MDS. The relationship between healthy qiand pathogenic factors varies in different developing stages of MDS. In the earlystage, although healthy qi is weak, it can still fight against pathogenic factors;in the middle stage, pathogenic factors are triumphing over healthy qi; and inthe last stage, pathogenic factors are strengthening while healthy qi weakeningeveryday. The whole process involves co-existence of deficiency and excess, withhealthy qi waning and pathogenic factors waxing. Hence, according to thepathogenesis of MDS, i.e. the deficiency of healthy qi and excess of pathogenicfactors and the settlement of pathogenic factors, specific treatments shouldbe employed in clinical practice and deficiency and excess, superficiality ororigin should be regarded as the differentiation points. The medicine appliedshould be deficiency-nourishing drugs supplemented by antipyretic and antidotemedicines. Therefore, it is proved in the study that the syndromes conform tothe treatment.
