Fiber lasers with optical fiber serving as amplifying medium have a lot of outstandingmerits and characteristics, such as good compatibility with fiber components and fiber system;wide bandwidth; better beam quality; lower noise and higher gain; compact structure, and soon. Consequently, fiber lasers have attracted considerable interest in many application fieldssuch as optical fiber communications and measurement system, optical sensor system, etc.And nowdays fiber lasers have become one of hot point over the world. However one of theobstacles facing the development of fiber lasers to replace the conventional lasers isenvironmental sensitivity. Fiber lasers are hard to be isolated from the environment so thattheir polarization state tends to vary over temperature and stress, therefore it is significant toinvestigate the fiber laser with stable polarization state.This work is to design and fabricate a fiber lasers that provides long time stable polarizationstate. The major results obtained are following:1. Analyzing the work principle of fiber lasers and factors affecting the polarization state.2. To propose a fiber laser with Sigma cavity configurations and investigate its polarizationstabilities with Jones matrix. Simulation results show that the Sigma cavity fiber laser canprovide stable polarization state3. An automatic measurement system is setuped, which is used to monitor the output powerand spectrum of laser simultaneously. The LabVIEW program makes the measurement systemrealize the function of data acquisition, memory, process, and result display.4. A practical fiber laser with Sigma cavity is setuped. Its polarization stability isinvestigated experimentally and compared with the numerical simulation results. The resultsshow that the Sigma cavity fiber laser can provide stable polarization state.Finally, both simulation and experimental results show that the proposed Sigma cavity fiberlaser is insensitive to environmental changes and can provide tunable output wavelength andstable polarization state continuously. Therefore it can be expected to be an effective lasersource for many applications such as measurement of optical networks and optical fibersensors.
