With the rapid development of optical communication technology, the research of EDFL (Erbium-doped Fiber Laser) has received great attention. As an ideal light source in the future optical communication system, EDFL has many distinguished advantages such as fully-matched with fiber systems, high efficiency, low threshold, tunability, simple and potential low-cost.In this thesis, a time-domain, one-dimensional dynamic model and a spectral-domain model for linear-cavity fiber laser have been established based on detailed theoretical analysis on the lasing action. Both the time- and spectral-domain models have been successfully implemented in MATLAB programs. Based on above researches, some important issues about linear-cavity EDFL's characteristics and design techniques have been discussed in great details. The major works include:1. the basic theory and the formulation systems of fiber laser including the operating principles, characterization of Erbium-doped fibers, the traveling-wave rate equations model, and the transfer matrix formulas.2. establishment of a time-domain, one-dimensional dynamic model for linear-cavity fiber lasers based on traveling-wave rate equations and numerically implemented in MATLAB programs, based on which, the space distribution of upper-level particle concentration, the pump power, and forward and backward optical powers along the lasing cavity at any given time can be analyzed.3. an extended transfer matrix technique has been successfully used for the development of a spectral-domain model for linear-cavity fiber laser. Detailed output power spectra of the EDFL's under consideration can be obtained using the spectral-domain model.4. the influences of designing and operating parameters on the characteristics of EDFL device are analyzed, based on which some guide-line for EDFL design has been given.
