Another New Culture Movement

In order to resist approaching danger of Japanese invasion, more and more people had risen to fight for national salvation among academia during the1930s.A variety of academic groups arose with their own unique thoughts. In political aspect they mainly debated about the issue of political outlet of China. Many political newspapers and journals, participated in the debate, such as Independent Review of Hu Shi, Reborn of Zhang Junmai, Ta Kung Pao, Opinions of the times, Weekly country news of National Central University. In the field of culture there were mainly two types of opinions including the view of China standard culture and Wholesale Westernization. They carried on a tit-for-tat debate against each other about the way to build a new national culture for the need of a modern country. Guofeng Group is an very important and influential group among all the culture groups at that time.Many learned scholars who used to teach and learn in Nanjing Higher Normal School rejoined together based at National Central University.Under the leadership of Liu Yizheng, Guofeng and Social Council was found to organize the Zhongshan Bookstore. Zhang qiyun,Miao fenglin and Ni shangda were its core members. They took advantage of Guofeng Semimonthly as the carrier of their views.A number of learned men of great insight expressed their ideas to resist foreign invasion and how to build China into a modern country. On the one hand, members of Guofeng Group had sticked to the ideas, which required scholars to learn knowledge of both China and western countries and called on to pay equal attention to science and culture. On the other hand, they would make adjustments according to the requirements of that time and take an active part in the discussion of social issues. There emerged a philosophy which advocated another New Culture Movement meeting the demand of the National Salvation Movement against Japan.This urgent appeal conformed to the historical trends which made it quite unique and distinguished from others.Another New Culture Movement extended the ideas,which demanded to focus attention to both science and culture formed during the period ofNanjing Higher Normal School. The movement,based on the idea of promoting Chinese traditional culture,had adhered to enhancing and glorifying the most advanced science as its core purpose.It is quite different from the opinions of northern groups at that time. Guofeng Semimonthly followed the consistent cultural method formed during the period of Xueheng.It was also a spearhead of demand for paying equal attention to science and culture raised by journal Thoughts and Times.
