China’s art museums have undoubtedly made tremendous advance in the past severalyears. Venue construction with the support of government and non-governmentalorganizations and a new wave of hardware upgrade offers vital historical opportunityto the development of art museum. In the meantime, art museum becomes more andmore important in a nation or society, which brings about sustained attention anddiscussion to future development of art museum in the whole society and makes howto establish and improve permanent collection exhibition system one of the subjectsthat attract most attention. Under this background, this paper will introduce, analyzeand research the evolution and theories of permanent collection exhibition of majorart museums in the world as well as attempt to summarize new features and potentialcriteria of permanent collection exhibition of art museum with the aim of providingsome useful reference for those practitioners to engage in study of this field of ourcountry in the future.In the first part of the paper, the basic concept and definition of permanent collectionexhibition of art museum are explicitly defined through elaboration. Then mainfeatures of permanent collection exhibition and differences between permanentcollection exhibition and other types of exhibition are expounded. Thus, throughcomparison and analysis to proportion of permanent collection exhibition in totaldisplay space among major art museums of the world, the important position ofpermanent collection exhibition in art museum is intuitively presented via data. In thesecond part, with a descriptive research methodology, description, introduction andcomparison is done to permanent collection exhibition model, development andrelevant theories of major art museums in the world. A large amount of systemizedmaterials and document literature are the key component of this part. In the third part,focus is on summary and induction to new features of permanent collection exhibitionmodel of major art museums worldwide at present. Attempt is made to summarizevarious realistic and historical factors and theories that affect current developmenttrend of permanent collection exhibition. In addition, discussion is done on what role permanent collection exhibition plays in present art system and what elements andcriteria the successful permanent collection exhibition should possess.
