With the increasing maturity of the semiconductor laser technology, semiconductor laser is widely used in various fields of our life. However, it is difficult to be used directly with the poor beam quality. So it is necessary to reshape the output beam of the semiconductor laser. The symmetry of the excitation beam and the uniformity of the output beam can be reshaped effectively by coupling the tapered optical fiber to the semiconductor laser. It is very meaningful to do research into the coupling of the tapered optical fiber and the semiconductor laser.This paper studies around the far-field characteristics of the semiconductor laser and the coupling characteristics of tapered optical fiber; in addition, a systematic analysis of the coupling method between the semiconductor laser and optical fiber has been discussed; and the coupling method which can accomplish the process of the reshaping and coupling in only one step is the key research in the dissertation. The ZEMAX software is used to model and simulate the coupling model of semiconductor laser and tapered optical fiber; and also to investigate the influence factors of the coupling efficiency such as the head face diameter of the tapered optical fiber, the work distance between the tapered optical fiber and the source, the tapered length of the tapered optical fiber, and so on. The accuracy of the results is verified by practical experiment, the maximum coupling efficiency of76.7%is got by coupling the808nm semiconductor laser to the tapered optical fiber. Note that the core diameter of the tapered optical fiber is200μm and its numerical aperture is0.22.
