With the development of Internet and the rise of stream media technology, the traditional face to face teaching mode can not meet the growing needs of people, in many cases people are turning to distance education. In this case, learners can save much time and make better use of resources. Modern distance education can transmit courses outside campus through audio, video and computer technology which includes real-time and non real-time.This thesis researched the existing distance education system and fouind that the existing distance education usually put courseware information on the website for students to watch or download, but it lacks of interaction between teachers and students. In this case this thesis designed and implemented a distance interactive education system based on Red5stream media server. Teacher or student involved in teaching activities only need to have a computer with the basic configuration installing the camera and microphone, could participate in courses without having to purchase expensive hardware and complex software.This thesis used B/S structure, in the front, it used OpenLaszlo language to write user interface. OpenLaszlo with multiple interfaces is responsible for opening, closing the connection, calling Red5service interface, it is also responsible for the release of a local stream and playing remote stream etc. The interface would be friendly, interactive and beautiful. In the background we used Red5stream media server. Red5is an open source Flash stream media server. It develops with java. This thesis used Red5stream media server to process audio and video files, text files for distance interactive education. Web server is responsible for the entire distance interactive education system process management and control, and the role management. This thesis designed and implemented online classroom module, whiteboard module, and chat module. Through this system, students can participate in courses easily and communicate with the teacher by audio information, text information exchange, as if they were face to face.Finally, this thesis built a test environment under network and tested distance interactive education system for functions and performance. The results show that the distance interactive education system based on Red5stream media server to meet the online classroom function, whiteboard function and chat function. The system has faster access speed and supports concurrent access.
