In recent years, the voltage controlled oscillator which used a dielectric resonator as frequency stabilization device have attracted more and more attention by the researchers, because of its advantages of small size, high Q value, and low cost. In this paper, by comparing the characteristics of all kinds and its working principle, a voltage controlled dielectric resonator oscillator (VCDRO) has been designed in the form of series feedback circuit with a low phase noise and compact profiles.In this paper, firstly, the research background, significance of the VCDRO and circuit principle are introduced. Then the circuit design method of the VCDRO has been carried on in detailed, in which several methods have been put forward for improving the phase noise performance of VCDRO. This paper also takes the CAD software to do the simulations as a guidance of circuit design. Combined with the simulation results, the circuit layout design has been optimized. Finally, according to the design idea in this paper, an VCDRO has been designed and fabricated. Meanwhile, after analyzing and discussing the existing problems, some solving measures also are proposed.The measured results show that the output frequency of the Ku band VCDRO is12GHz, and the phase noise result is-96.16dBc/Hz@100KHz, which has reached the domestic advanced level.The VCDRO features low phase noise, small size, and high temperature stability, etc. It can be widely applied in various kinds of electronic equipment, such as the transmitter, frequency synthesizer, as a local source of the receiver and so on, It has a very high value in engineering application.
