With the continuous development of the information technology and the large number of applications of the teaching of the network technology, the virtual experiments have been increasingly adopted by more and more vocational schools. The teaching effectiveness was rather poor although the vocational schools paid a lot of money for building up the conventional laboratories of the basic machinery works practices and the daily maintenance. The virtual experiments simulated by using the virtual reality technology, which needed only a small investment and was easy to be maintained and well extensible, could produce the effective action when they were illustrated to the students who would make a deeply impress of the processing. In this paper, a’virtual laboratory’including both the cognitive and the assembling experiments on the base of many other common basic machinery practice laboratories was designed and achieved by the LABVIEW as the main development tool, subsidiary with the other three-dimensional modeling software such as PROE and3DSMAX after the analysis of the system architecture and construction methods of the currently popular virtual laboratory, combined with the specific requirements of the basic mechanical experiment. The module, interface and database design of the virtual laboratory were also interpreted in this paper. The construction method of the system based on the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), the scene optimization technique based on the improved Level Of Detail (LOD) algorithm and the simulation and interaction design were focused research. Last, the detailed implementation steps about the modeling building, assembling, interaction, cognition and the experiment reports were illustrated by the disassembling and assembling experiments of the virtual speed reducer.
