Current research topics has experimented the use of directional antennas in wireless ad-hoc networks for power control during communication. It has shown effective in improvement in thr-oughput and considerable reduction in interferences due to its ability to select radio signals of in-terest in specific directions, while filtering out unwanted frequencies from other directions. In p-ower control, minimizing the transmission power of two nodes equipped with directional anten-na is a challenge, the distance separating the transmitter and the receiver usually piggy-backed within the CTS during the handshake RTS/CTS. Since the CTS can obtain the location informat-ion totransmitter, the receiver broadcast CTS frame to let other nodes stop transmitting. In this thesis, we adapt a distance aware/alternative transmit power path to create to improve the performance abiinitio on three main network topological senarios:sparse, dense and cluster networks. Ordinarily, by inserting mobility within these three topologies, we found that the system has very low throughput, moreso, the gap created by the moving nodes and the collision effects on sparse nodes drains power. To overcome the problem, we developed schemes we called Alternative Transmission Power (ATP), a distance aware scheme and an updating information scheme. These schemes relied on cross-layer design protocol that helps to avoid collision. The alternative transmission power scheme tries to find alternative power path between the sender and the receiver. It does so by calculating the different transmission powers of all paths from the transmitter to the receiver node, and then we used the RTS/CTS to allow the transmitting node to be aware of the distance separating it with the receiver, so that it can adjust or use less transmission power during the communication. The alternative transmission power path scenario chooses alternative transmission Power path that is better to receive the signals. In our experiment we achieved this using the RREQ/RREP implemented in AODV protocol to make this decision. Figure5and6shows an example of scenario where a transmitting node uses an alternative transmission power to communicate with the receiving node.We simulated our scheme on three network scenarios-sparse, dense and cluster networks. We obtained data by varying different parameters of the CBR rate. Our simulation gave different throughputs during after applying our scheme. After applying our scheme (the ATP and information updating) we obtain more10%improvement on throughput in the various topologies and over20%improvement in power savings.
