With the advances in electronics, computer technology, smart structure technology has made great development in structure sensing, energy harvesting and vibration control. Based on Kirchhof-Love thin shell theory, this paper focuses on pieozelectric\flexoelectric sensing, piezoelectric energy harvesting and vibration control on simply supported cylindrical shells utilizing modal expansion method. In order to prepare for the following study, an experiment system of modal identification was set up and the excited mode shapes, the modal damping ratios, the natural frequencies of simply supported cylindrical shell were tested and obtained. A diagonal piezoelelctric sensing theory on simply supported cylindrical shell was derived based on modal expansion method. The related experiment system was designed and set up for validation of the diagonal sensing theory. A diagonal flexoelectric sensor was designed based on simply supported cylindrical shell. The relative flexoelectric sensing theory was derived and the sensitivity distibution was analyzed. Besides, the relationship between sensitivity and orientation angle of sensing patch was illustrated. So is the relationship between sensitivity and the ratio of patch width to length. The piezoelectric energy harvesting theory on simply supported cylindrical shell was separately studied based on voltage source model and current source model. Based on axisymmtric modes, the characteristic of power distribution was illustrated, and the relationship between power and patch angle was shown. Dimensions and locations of piezoelectric patch were optimized as well. In the end, the fuzzy control method was applied to vibration control for simply supporeted cylindrical shell. The control effect was simulated by Simulink and validated by experiment. All these results can offer guidance for the designing of smart structure.
