Copper flat wire is an essential material in motor, transformers and other industrial manufacturing, and producing copper flat wire by continuous extrusion equipment is a new technology which appears in recent years. In the process of continuous extrusion production, the surface of copper flat wire may appear different types of defects like bubbles, oxidation, scratch because of the raw materials (copper), extrusion equipment, extrusion process and production environments factors. All of these will affect the quality of copper flat wire. The traditional ways of defects detection is random checking the finisher production by visual. This method has not only large labor intensity and low efficiency, but also cannot fully reflect the copper flat wire surface quality. If the method of visual inspection with touch used on the product which being producing, it will cause worse accuracy and larger labor intensity. In a word, the traditional methods can’t meet the requirements of modern industrial production on the quality of copper flat wire products any more.This article aims to develop a kind of on line equipment combining computer vision technique and digital picture processing technique to detect the surface defect of copper flat wire. It will improve its quality eventually.This article includes three main parts:1. Based on the specific requirements, the paper gave the overall design of copper flat wire surface defect detection system, choosing the required hardware, and determining the recognition system’s software development environment.2. Using high-speed cameras to get surface image of copper flat wire made by continuous extrusion process, and make the images get digital image processing. Using axis projection identification method based on digital image processing technology to judge defects, and preliminary proved the digital image processing are an effective method on identifying copper strip surface defects.3. Using MATLAB software to make a clean and well-executed GUI graphical user interface to detect the surface defect of copper flat wire.This article is about a method for automatic identification of copper flat wire surface defect, and it improves the level of defect inspection to precise quantitative recognition level. It can reduce the dependence on manual inspection in the traditional detection method. This approach has good prospects in copper flat wire production area which still using manual identification of defects.
