With the development of power systems and the proposal of smart grid, thecommunication technology in the power systems needs to be upgraded. From all thecommunication methods of power systems, power line communication utilizespower line as the transmission medium, it is the only wired communication methodwithout additional physical transmission medium. G3-PLC standard is a power linecommunication specification that defines physical and MAC layer, it is to meet thefuture challenges of smart grid communication. G3-PLC mainly occupiesCENELEC A band, and it is based on OFDM technology, it is a global open protocolin face of communication technology in smart grid.This paper introduces the origin background and significance of the topic, aswell as the history and current development of power line communication. Itdescribes the technical characteristics of power line communication and somemainstream standards of narrowband PLC, and finally selects the G3-PLC standardfor the design of this project.Before the design of power line communication platform, this paper analyzesthe power line firstly. It analyzes the input impedance characteristics, multipatheffects, frequency attenuation and noise classification, and displays the actuallymeasured input impedance, frequency and noise waveforms of power line. Finallywith Pspice software, this paper makes the simulation of transmission characteristicsof power line, also it simulates the noise of power line with Matlab.This paper mainly focuses on OFDM technology, it explains specifically theprinciple characteristics and key technology of OFDM. And then this paper analyzesG3-PLC standard from the physical layer specification, MAC layer specification andISO model. Also it describes the establishment of G3-PLC, the background, themain features and the applications, etc. With the G3-PLC standard, this papersimulates the basic scheme of OFDM system.Furthermore, this paper utilizes Xilinx FPGA and ISE platform to complete thedesign of OFDM modulation and demodulation with Verilog language. It displaysthe modules of OFDM, including preamble module, scramble module, DBPSKmodulation and demodulation, convolution encoder and decoder, IFFT module andso on. Finally, this paper utilizes AFE031chip of TI company to design the analogfront end and coupling portion.
