In today’s networked society, the need to authenticate ourselves to machinesis ever increasing. Biometric identification is the most convenient and effectivetechnology for authentication, and iris recognition technology attracts more andmore attention for its high accuracy and stability.An access control system based on iris recognition is introduced in thispaper. The system is composed of a central server, several iris recognitionterminals and the local area network that connects the server and the terminals.The hardware part of the iris recognition terminal is based on ARM+DSP dual-core architecture, with an extra chip TVP5158to achieve dual iris acquisition.The software part of the terminal is based on the Codec Engine framework,where the ARM side is responsible for image acquisition, showing the results,database management and network communication. The DSP side softwarefocuses on image processing algorithms, which consists of image evaluation andpreprocessing, iris localization and segmentation, feature extraction and codematching. The access control software on the server side is composed of fivemodules: the access control module, the attendance module, the database module,the back-stage module and the user interface module.The main contributions of this paper is: a design using TVP5158withDM6446for dual iris image acquisition and processing, an implementation ofclassic iris recognition algorithm on DM6446with high accuracy and goodperformance, a design of LAN-based access control system.
