With the rapid development of modern industry and the growth of the national economy,the power quality of the power sector requirements are also increasingly, reactive powerbalance is an important guarantee for the power quality. In the power system of submerged arcfurnace smelting, due to the use of transformers and short network, resulting in a largeinductive load and the loss of reactive power, the reactive power compensation is particularlyimportant.The paper elaborated the working principle of the submerged arc furnace, combined withthe status of reactive power compensation, proposed a high voltage and low voltage jointcompensation of the submerged arc furnace control system plan. Power transmitter PDMrespectively obtain the data of electrical parameters from the primary side and the secondaryside of the furnace transformer, serial communication passed the date to the host computer,after storage and process, programmable logic controller PLC control output. The papersummarized the reactive power compensation situation and development trend from domesticto international. Then after analyzed the advantages and the disadvantages of the high voltagereactive power compensation and low voltage reactive power compensation, according to theactual operating condition of the submerged arc furnace, using power factor and voltage as thecontrol variables, fuzzy control algorithm to achieve the automatic switching reactive powercompensation. Visual Basic6.0software development platform realized the preparation ofhigh voltage and low voltage joint reactive power compensation control system software,enabling user landing ratio setting, automatic control, manual control and data storagefunctions.Building the high voltage and low voltage joint compensation of the submerged arcfurnace control system, the performance tests and experiment results showed that the system issimple and reliable operation, not only can effectively improve the power factor and theproductivity of the submerged arc furnace, but also improve the degrees of the automation, intelligent and interactive features.
